How does one find homes for the homeless without relying on the government to provide? Long-time realtor Alex MacDonald and a group of business partners decided to take matters into their own hands. They formed the Chilliwack Housing for Homeless Foundation to buy affordable homes in the area. They purchase properties that can be managed on a self-sufficient basis, meaning the $375/month housing allowance that single people on social assistance receive has to cover the mortgage and strata fees.
Using their real estate smarts the group identified a home which, with a 50 per cent down payment by the foundation, a Vancity grant and mortgage, kept the rent down at that sustainable level. It is their first of what they hope will be one to three purchases per year. Vancity account manager Brian Cade says the foundation should make a big impact in Chilliwack for years to come.
