Vancity member Haney Farmers Market Society provides support for farmers to grow and sell local food and for artisans to market their locally crafted goods, improving the economic stability of the community. In 2011 just over 73,000 people visited the Society’s two markets, spending nearly $420,000 in the local economy.
The Haney Farmers Market Society was a perfect fit for Vancity’s enviroFund™ Growing Farmers’ Markets program. “Over the years, Vancity has supported and encouraged the growth of the Haney Farmers Market Society through generous funding towards projects and staffing needs,” says Manager Eileen Dwillies. “The funds we received from Vancity in 2012 will be put towards the wages of a Market Coordinator and Market Day Children’s Coordinator at both markets. We would not have been able to do this without Vancity’s support.”
Between 2007 and 2012 Vancity and the Vancity Community Foundation supported farmer’s markets in the Lower Mainland and the Fraser Valley with over $150,000 in community project grants, $344,000 in enviroFund™ grants and $100,000 in mission-based grants.
We want farmer’s markets to achieve long-term financial sustainability. They support local farmers and our local food system, which contribute to our community’s health and economic well-being.
