"Our work is recognized and supported, especially by Vancity." --Ilana Labow, co-founder/director Fresh Roots.
Fresh Roots Urban Farm Society takes first prize in Good Money® Impact Venture Challenge.
Fresh Roots Urban Farm Society works with schools and community groups to build innovative neighbourhood market farms. Fresh Roots’ sustainable farms are outdoor classrooms and community spaces where students practice math, write poetry, and explore their natural world. By awarding first prize and $50,000 to the Fresh Roots Urban Farm Society, Vancity’s Good Money® Impact Venture Challenge ensures that Fresh Roots’ schoolyard farm programs continue to thrive and grow.
The Good Money® Impact Venture Challenge was launched by Vancity to help establish and grow promising, socially impactful new businesses by post-secondary students and recent post-secondary graduates.
In 2012 Vancity also granted $50,000 to Fresh Roots through its enviroFund™ program. The funds will be used for the Schoolyard Market Gardens & Education project, through which Fresh Roots will develop two quarter-acre schoolyard market gardens at VanTech Secondary and David Thompson Secondary.
