Juvarya Veltkamp is serving her second term on Vancity’s board, having already served on the board in 2021. Juvarya brings to the board a rich tapestry of experiences in leadership, governance, finance, and climate justice.
In her professional journey, Juvarya has played integral roles in the leadership of public agencies and purpose-driven organizations. This includes serving as Director of the Canada Climate Law Initiative at the University of British Columbia, and as Chief of Strategy and Operations for InBC Investment, a $500-million investment fund. She has a proven track record of navigating complex business issues from both her professional roles and her service on several non-profit boards.
Throughout her career, Juvarya has championed several transformative initiatives, including a robust impact investing framework that emphasizes climate action, diversity, inclusion, and Indigenous Reconciliation, and Vancouver’s green economy strategy, that doubled the number of green jobs in Vancouver. As a Senior Advisor at C40 Cities, she now steers the Green Ports Forum, a network of cities and ports around the world spearheading the decarbonization of global supply chains.
Juvarya holds a master’s in business administration (MBA) from the University of British Columba. Other notable degrees include a BA (Hons) in Economics and Sustainable Development from the School of Oriental and African Studies, in London U.K. and a Post Baccalaureate Certificate in International Business and Chinese from Capilano University, where she was awarded the university’s Alumni Award of Excellence for her work in climate action. Juvarya is also committed to continuous learning and professional development, and earned the Credit Union Director Achievement Level A award, as well as the Global Competent Boards Designation (GCB.D) and a certificate in Sustainability and Climate Risk (SCR) from the Global Association of Risk Professionals.
A dynamic and visionary leader, Juvarya is committed to impactful and sustainable initiatives, values-driven institutions, community wellbeing, and global collaboration. In addition to her professional and board governance roles, Juvarya exemplifies this commitment to by actively contributing her time in a senior advisory capacity, including for Realize Capital’s social finance fund, Vancouver’s Maritime Centre for Climate, and the District of Squamish’s Economic Leadership Team.
Originally from the U.K. with Pakistani heritage, Juvarya spent her formative years in Saudi Arabia, and she is now grateful to live with her husband, two young children, and two cats – Shmi Skywalker and Go Go Gamora – in Squamish, the traditional ancestral and unceded territory of the Squamish Nation and the Coast Salish people.
