Vancity announces 2010 Board election results

Vancouver, British Columbia, March 31, 2010: Vancity today announced the results of its 2010 Board of Directors election for three positions on its Board.  The election took place between February 27 and March 27. The following three candidates had the highest total ballots cast: Virginia Weiler, Bob Williams and Allen Garr.

Virginia Weiler
Joining Vancity as an employee in 1996, Virginia helped the organization become the first North American financial institution to operate a peer loan fund, investing in new immigrant and women entrepreneurs. She now runs an economic development consultancy and is parent to a preschooler.

Bob Williams
Bob is a long-standing Vancity Board member, holding several different positions over the years. While on the Board at Vancity, the credit union established the Vancity Community Foundation, Vancity Enterprises and the enviroFund grant program. Bob has also been in public service, among other positions serving as MLA for Vancouver East.

Allen Garr
A Vancity member for 30 years, Allen has a long career in journalism, most recently as a columnist at community newspaper, The Courier, and has been actively involved in promoting urban agriculture and the environment through the last 15 years. As a trained accountant, he has a strong finance background.

This year, 16,017 ballots, totaling 43,931 votes were cast. This represents four per cent of eligible members, down from 6.6 per cent of eligible members in 2009.
